With 104.7 million passengers in 2023, Dubai’s not nipping at its heels just yet. Dubai International Airport ranked as the second busiest in 2023, up from fifth place in 2022 and fourth place in 2019, according to Airports Council International's preliminary ranking, which was released on Monday. The resurgence of international travel has been a bright spot for airlines with big international networks, while ultra-low-cost, domestic-focused U.S. airlines have struggled in recent months. Domestic U.S. airports continued to post big gains in passenger counts, but some slipped in the rankings compared with the middle of the pandemic, when international travel restrictions limited long-haul trips abroad. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, Delta Air Lines ' biggest hub, once again topped the list of the busiest airports, serving 104.7 million passengers, ACI said. 2023 was the safest year for flying, IATA found. On average, you would have to fly every day for over 100,000 years to experience a fatal incident. AdvertisementLast year was the "best ever" for flying safety, the International Air Transport Association said. It found that on average, a person would have to fly every day for 103,239 years before experiencing a fatal incident. There was only one fatal incident in 2023, a crash involving a domestic flight in Nepal in which 68 passengers and four crew died, according to IATA.

The head of the FAA told Congress how its panel is examining sleep science to help. Despite the best efforts of pilots and air traffic controllers, sometimes collisions do happen. It said the captain was distracted and confused by instructions from air traffic controllers, while the co-pilot lost track of the plane's location. Starting in 2024, officials say Singapore’s Changi Airport will introduce automated immigration clearance, which will allow passengers to depart the city-state without passports, using only biometric data. Biometric technology, along with facial recognition software, is already in use to some extent in Changi Airport at automated lanes at immigration checkpoints. Tokyo, Japan CNN —Two airplanes have “highly likely collided” with each other at the Haneda Airport in Tokyo, Japanese public broadcaster NHK is reporting, citing the country’s transport ministry. It cited the Tokyo Aviation Office of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT), which is working to confirm the details of the situation. The runway near where the two aircraft were stopped has been suspended, leaving just three in operation. Airport video footage from NHK shows part of one of the Thai aircraft’s wings missing and debris on the runway close by. The Tokyo Airport Office has sent staff to the area to check the situation.

Opened last December, the Hotel Villa Fontaine Premier & Grand Haneda Airport has 1,717 rooms and is directly connected to Haneda International Airport Terminal 3. Tokyo has also announced plans to receive up to 60 million overseas visitors to the country by 2030. And as inbound tourism recovers, Haneda – which has been crowned the world’s most punctual mega-airport – hopes to ride that wave. Developers want to expand those routes to greater swathes of Japan as part of broader plans to help revitalize the country’s regions, according to Katsuyuki Tou, general manager of the Haneda Airport Garden. Tou explained that visitors to the multipurpose complex can already get a taste of what Japan offers.

A Japan Airlines flight was turned back after missing a curfew, per a Japanese newspaper. Fukuoka Airport does not allow flights to land after 10 p.m. due to noise concerns. The flight, JL331 by Japan Airlines, was turned back just outside Fukuoka Airport on Sunday February 19 after just missing the curfew for landing, The Asahi Shimbun reported. A Japan Airlines flight was turned back. In an email to Insider, Japan Airlines said it covered cab fares and hotels for everyone on board.
